Beach Wedding at RUI Guanacaste Costa Rica 2015

This beautiful wedding took place on the white sand beach in front of the stunning Hotel RUI in Costa Rica. The bride got ready in her suite with family and friends, and then the father of the bride walked her to the beach were the ceremony took place. After a moving ceremony, the bride and groom were toasted with champagne. We headed to the garden to take a few group photos and the heavens opened with a tropical downpour. Luckily the rain was short-lived and we could return to the beach for some magical photographs. We were blessed with an epic rainy season sunset!

Elopement at La Paz Waterfall Gardens – Costa Rica – 2015

This young, fun couple wanted an adventurous elopement somewhere beautiful and tropical. The La Paz Waterfall Gardens and Peace Lodge certainly is that, a hotel and private nature reserve in the foothills of Poas Volcano. La Paz has lots of attractions, including rainforest trails, five waterfalls, and lots of Costa Rica’s amazing wildlife (mainly rescue animals).
The location of the wedding was just stunning, surrounded by rainforest with a beautiful waterfall and river below. Marcelo Galli gave a moving ceremony, and then the couple went down to the base of the waterfall for a quiet moment together. We walked back through the jungle trails to the lodge, where they cut their wedding cake.
We went in the hummingbird garden and had an amazing time. The staff put a couple of hummingbird nectar feeders into the bride’s bouquet,the hummingbirds darted in and out and around the bouquet, a magical moment! We next met a couple of very friendly and cheeky toucans, they were hilarious!
A wonderful wedding at La Paz filled with adventure and laughter!

Tropical Beach Wedding at Playa Langosta Costa Rica 2015

When this fun-loving couple visited Costa Rica last year they fell in love with their beachfront hotel and decided to get married there!
The Sueño del Mar is a boutique bed and breakfast and their gardens lead directly onto the white sands of Playa Langosta. The wedding ceremony took place on the beach, with the arch and aisle looking towards the Pacific Ocean. After the ceremony we watched the sunset over the ocean. The wedding group then headed to Restaurant El Pescador in Tamarindo for an amazing reception party, with dinner, live music and fire dancers. Beach Wedding by Horseback – Playa Ventanas Costa Rica 2015

The bride is from Poland, the groom is from New Zealand, they live in Australia – Where are you going to get married? Costa Rica, of course!
Their wedding ceremony took place of the beautiful beach of Playa Ventanas on the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The bride and her father arrived by horseback to a tropical arch made of palm fronds and Heliconia, where family and friends were gathered for the relaxed beach wedding. After the ceremony, refreshing pipas were served to the guests. A pipa is a young coconut that has plenty of rehydrating coconut juice inside. The groom’s daughter played guitar and sang, and the guests enjoyed the music and the sunset. The wedding party then went to a fabulous nearby villa in Dominical for the reception dinner and party.

Tropical Beach Wedding – Jaco Costa Rica 2015

This fun couple chose to get married in Costa Rica surrounded by their closest friends and family. The whole wedding party were staying at Hotel Doce Lunas, a charming hotel in Jaco surrounded by 5 acres of lush gardens. I met the couple at the hotel, where we got a few pre-wedding photographs. I love the photographs of the bride; her white dress contrasting against the bright colors of her tattoos, her flowers and the jungle. For the Beach ceremony the wedding party went to Esterillos, a short drive away. After a moving ceremony in front of the Pacific Ocean, we took some fun group photographs and bride and groom portraits. This is where I said goodbye to the wedding group, as then returned to the hotel for the reception dinner and party.

This beautiful wedding was held at Villa Paraiso, one of Manuel Antonio’s fantastic ocean view rental homes. The wedding had a wonderful relaxed feel with all the family staying at Casa Paraiso. The ceremony took place under the villa’s covered deck, decorated with flowers. After the ceremony we took portraits and group photos in the garden overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The wedding party returned to the villa for cocktails, live music with salsa lessons and then a delicious reception dinner prepared by the in-house chef. A beautiful wedding, perfectly planned by Donielle and the team at First Class Villas in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

Flamingo Beach Elopement Costa Rica 2015

This lovely couple chose a beach elopement for their wedding. They were staying at the Flamingo Beach Resort which is located right on the beautiful Flamingo Bay in Northern Guanacaste. The intimate ceremony took place on the resort’s beach overlooking the bay, with only the bride’s parent’s as witnesses. After a moving ceremony by Marcello Galli, we took some gorgeous photographs on the beach with reflections in tide pools with the gorgeous light. I particularly like the after-dark photos with the lit palm trees.

Pacific Coast Wedding in Costa Rica – Villa Caletas 2015

Villa Caletas’ amphitheater on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is one of the most stunning and romantic places to get married. The amphitheater is set high on a steep hill overlooking the ocean, the hotel itself is beautiful with lots of terraces and garden.
The ceremony took place just before sunset and the light was perfect. After the ceremony the reception dinner took place in one of the hotels banquet rooms, the tables decorated with colorful flowers and pictures of the bride and groom. The wedding party and guests were all staying at the hotel, making everything thing so easy and enjoyable. Such and fun event and another great wedding by the team at Villa Caletas

Intimate Wedding at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort- Montezuma Costa Rica 2015

This intimate wedding took place on the beach in front of the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort. Ylang Ylang is situated on the southern most tip of the Nicoya Peninsular, and truly a beautiful setting for weddings The ceremony took place under a driftwood arch decorated with colorful tropical flowers. As the sunset after the ceremony we tools some relaxed photographs on the beach. The wedding party returned to Ylang Ylang for a reception dinner, followed by a fire dancing show and a bonfire on the beach – a magical day! This wedding was planned by Emma, Ylang Ylangs’s wonderful wedding planner.

This Bride and Groom chose their 10 year anniversary of dating for their wedding day, what a romantic couple! (I am secretly envious of this lucky groom, he has fewer dates to remember!)
The families were staying at Jungle Creek, in Manuel Antonio. The bride and her sisters had fun getting ready here, before heading down to Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio’s famous beach for the ceremony. The wedding took place under the almond and palm trees with the Manuel Antonio National Park as a backdrop. After the ceremony we were blessed to have gorgeous sunset for our beach photo shoot. Later the whole wedding party went to the Costa Verde Hotel for the reception dinner. A gorgeous day!

Wow what a gorgeous wedding, everything was just perfection! An absolutely adorable couple with lovely family and friends, an incredible private villa with stunning ocean views and a beautiful wedding perfectly planned by Tropical Occasions. The wedding took place on the private lawn of Casa Bali, just outside Tamarindo, in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The ceremony took place on the lawn over looking the ocean, the aisle was decorated with lanterns filled with peach and white flowers and the bride and groom stood under a pagoda covered in white silks. The wedding reception dinner took in the villa’s large living room and then dancing on the poolside terrace into the night. A wonderful day!

Young Love Wedding at Punta Leona Costa Rica

Many people say that love is like childlike happiness and this young couples love can clearly be seen on their happy smiling faces. This wedding was so fun to shoot, full of laughs and joy, but also real young love.
The bride got ready in a house in the Punta Leona Resort on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. The bride’s father was patiently waiting to see her, and I love that excitement and surprise in that sequence of photos. The intimate wedding took place at Punta Leona’s Beach Club. After the ceremony we took some lovely photos on the volcanic rocks with the sun setting over the ocean. The wedding party let off wish sky lanterns before heading back to the club house for a private party.

Creating Memories – Family Portraits in Costa Rica

This lovely family wanted to get some special photos of their little girl, they asked me to do some family portraits while they were on vacation in Costa Rica. They have another baby on the way, but did not want that to be the main focus of the session. I think we captured some beautiful moments, including all members of the family. They are thrilled with the photos…and that makes me HAPPY!

Poolside Wedding at a Manuel Antonio Villa – Costa Rica

This beautiful wedding took place at Montemar Estates in Manuel Antonio. The villa has an amazing location on the top on a hill, giving wonderful mountain and ocean views. The ceremony took place next to the pool followed by the whole wedding party doing a wish lantern release before dinner and dancing. A fabulous wedding organized by Ingrid at Montemar.

After the ceremony, the whole wedding party released wish lanterns. The reception dinner took place is Montemar’s spacious living area. Dancing took place on the deck, and the Bride and Groom topped off the evening by jumping into the pool..what a fun night!

Honeymoon Photography on a Costa Rican Beach 2014

One of the most important things about being a great photographer is being able to make you clients feel comfortable and enjoy the photography session.
This couple really wanted some great photographs to celebrate their wedding, so coming to Costa Rica on honeymoon they contacted me to do a Honeymoon Photography Session. Initially, like many clients, they felt a little uncomfortable, I know how they feel when I have the lens turned on me! But working with them, varying the location, suggesting poses and having fun, they soon relaxed and actually started to enjoy themselves! We initially started with a morning session, but later in the day when I saw it was going to be an amazing sunset, I called them and they were keen to come back for more! I think we got some amazing photos!

Sunset Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica November 2014

It was a real pleasure to be part of Jenna and Scott’s intimate Wedding. The wedding party were staying at a rental villa in Tulemar Gardens and the ceremony took place on the Tulemar’s beach. The group stayed on the beach to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, music, drinks and the sunset, and later returned their villa for a reception dinner. The private beach and secluded houses and villas that adorn this beautiful tropical property make Tulemar a premier setting for weddings. As always, Tropical Occasions did a masterful job organizing the details, arrangements and timings allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the excitement and beauty of the day.

The vibrant landscape and changing colors of this sunset created a beautiful canvas and the opportunity for me to intertwine Scott and Jenna into that changing light. It is a pleasure to see a couple bask in their happiness and be in an area that matches that moment. That combination gives us a great recipe for meaning and insight into their portraits.

Villa Kiskadee was the perfect place to have their reception dinner which was privately catered by a great team from Desiree’s in-house catering. Bubbles and laughter abound as they enjoyed the oceans breeze, sounds of the rainforest and light of the moon during their evening. There is something special about having a small group of friends and family together in celebration of such a momentous union of souls. The gathering of friends and family during this celebration had an infectious energy that reminded me how fortunate that I am able to capture that sparkle for them to cherish and share. Can you tell I enjoy what I do?!

Wedding in Playa Prieta – Papagayo – Costa Rica 2014

This beautiful wedding took place at the Playa Prieta Beach Club, which is part of the Four Seasons Resort in Costa Rica. The weather and light were just perfect, and we got some absolutely gorgeous photographs…I think my favorite is where the bride and groom are in the water up to their knees and the water is “on fire” around them with the sunset.

Beautiful Church Wedding in San Joaquín de Flores Costa Rica – 2014

This lovely couple got married in San Joaquín de Flores, a beautiful little pueblo near Heredia in Costa Rica’s capital San Jose. The bride got ready at her parents house, just minutes from the church. The church in San Joaquin is just gorgeous, it was built about 1880. Interestingly, the church was built from rock carried from Cartago by ox cart, 87 km away!

Wedding at Costa Verde – Manuel Antonio – Costa Rica 2014

This destination wedding took place at the Costa Verde Hotel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. The Costa Verde has three pools, and the pool where the wedding took place has a rock star has a view of the Pacific Ocean and the Manuel Antonio National Park. The ceremony took place under a white tent with a beautiful rose and crystal arch.

After the ceremony we went to the beach and got some fun group shots on the rocks. We even borrowed some surf boards to get a few surfy photos as the bride and groom are really LOVE surfing. The wedding party later headed to El Avion; Costa Verde’s Airplane Restaurant: for a reception party. We took some great photos in front of the plane and had lots of fun with sparklers…all I can say is – what a PURA VIDA Wedding!

Fantastic Wedding at Casa Fantastica – Costa Rica 2014

What a wonderful wedding, it reminded be of something out of the movies! The wedding party and ceremony took place at Casa Fantastica, located in one of Costa Rica’s top vacation destinations, Manuel Antonio. This luxury rental villa has 8 bedrooms and a huge outdoor living space perfect for wedding ceremonies.

The wedding had a fresh green theme, wedding site and reception area were decorated in green, white and black with the palest pink roses. Even the bride and groom’s shoes were green.

The bride and groom were a really fun couple, and lots of their friends and family came to celebrate. After the beautiful ocean view ceremony the group had cocktails and then a wonderful dinner at the house prepared by private chefs. The wedding party then went to the Manuel Antonio Beach for a bonfire party with fire dancers… a spectacular end to a FANTASTIC Day!

This gorgeous wedding took place at Hotel Parador last month. The Parador is on the tip of a peninsula in Manuel Antonio, so you get the most amazing views up and down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The wedding was planned by the wonderful Weddings Costa Rica and took place on a covered terrace in the Parador Hotel. After the wedding we took some photos in the beautiful grounds of the Parador and then wedding party had the reception in one of the Parador’s excellent restaurants…a glorious day!

This wedding was just filled with wonderful colors; from the “Something Blue” shoes; to the orange Tiger Lillies and Rose petals.
As there was a little rain, the wedding took place on the balcony in the couples rental house at Buena Vista Villas in Manuel Antonio. After the ceremony the sky cleared and we went to the private beach below Buena Vista and got some really fun photos. The wedding party then when to Emilio’s Cafe for a sumptuous reception dinner. A fun and colorful wedding, planned by Karen at Tropical Occasions; even a little rain could not dampen this day!

Trash the Dress SUP Style in Uvita – Costa Rica – June 2014

These are a few photos from a recent “Trash the Dress” session I did for an amazing Bride and Groom that came to Costa Rica to get married. They love to surf and SUP, so the “Trash the Dress” was the next step. I brought my family along for the shoot and we hit a few surf stops between Dominical and Uvita and decided the waves looked just right at Playa Piñuelas. Playa Piñuelas is a small beach to the South of the Marino Ballena National Park. I also brought down my quadrocopter drone to get a few aerial shots too. A fun day!

Wedding in Dominical – Costa Rica – May 2014

This couple love to surf, so they decided to come down to Dominical, Costa Rica for a surfing vacation and to get married. The ceremony took place with the bride and groom stood on some volcanic rocks by the Pacific Ocean’s edge. We got some great beach photos and I love the sequence with the wish lanterns…gorgeous! I even got a couple of photos of the couple with their surf boards in their VW Camper Van…then the party kicked off at Roca Verde, a great night!

Last weekend I did a follow up shoot with the bride and groom, I got them in the surf and even paddle boarding in their wedding gear…photos to come!

Rainforest and Waterfall Wedding – Rio Celeste – Costa Rica May 2014

This adventurous couple love waterfalls, jungle and anything off the beaten track. They contacted me with their hearts set on hiking into the Tenorio Volcano National Park and getting married by the Rio Celeste waterfall. My first thought was AWESOME! My second thought was WHAT!? That’s Crazy! Well anybody that knows me, also knows that I am up for an adventure… Rio Celeste means “Light Blue River”, and the water is literally turquoise, some say it is due to a chemical reaction between sulphur and calcium carbonate in the rocks, other say due to magic. The wedding party were staying at the beautiful Nayara near Costa Rica’s famous Arenal Volcano. From there we drove to the Tenorio Volcano National Park and met a local guide. The hike down to the Rio Celeste is about an hour through beautiful rainforest, we stopped along the way doing parts of the ceremony on route and ending with the exchange of rings at the main river and waterfall. After the wedding and adventure at Rio Celeste we returned to the fantastic Nayara Hotel for the reception dinner. The dinner was held at Nayara’s Latin Fusion Bar, a funky colorful restaurant which complimented the tropical colors of the table decorations and flowers. After dinner the party started with a local music group and dancing. What a spectacular day, so glad that we did it, here’s to the bride and groom, you are awesome!!

Manuel Antonio Beach Wedding – Costa Rica May 2014

I was recently asked to photograph an intimate beach wedding for a lovely couple, they chose Costa Rica because they could have a great vacation with their families too. The day had been looking a little rainy in the morning - May is the start of the rainy season in Costa Rica – so I was praying to the sun gods! But we had no rain and a dramatic sky for some great photos – got to be a lucky start for the couple. I love the arbor made of palm fronds and Heliconia – could not be more tropical!

Rainforest and Beach Wedding Photo Shoot – Costa Rica April 2014

This amazing couple love beaches, waterfall and the rainforest. After considering a BIG wedding back at home, their love for adventure and nature won out. They packed their bags and came to Costa Rica for an amazing adventure and a unique wedding photo shoot..

We started the day at Rainmaker and got some wonderful photos in the lush green jungle. In the afternoon with headed to Manuel Antonio Beach and were blessed with an incredible rainy season sunset. ….I love these photos and I absolutely loved this photo shoot, I hope you enjoy them!

Wedding in Tamarindo Guanacaste – Costa Rica April 2014

This beautiful wedding took place at the Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort in Guanacaste, it’s a great location as it s right on one of Costa Rica’s gorgeous beaches. One of my favorite images is the photo of the proud father of the bride looks on as his daughter gets married, a lovely moment. We got the most incredible unearthly light right before sunset, just when we were taking photos on the beach, then back to one of the Diria’s restaurants for the reception dinner and dancing. This superb wedding was organized by Donna from Pura Vida Weddings, they specialize in weddings in the Guanacaste region.

Romantic Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio – Costa Rica April 2014

How do I describe this beach wedding? ” Fun and romantic with a twist of vintage chique”…sounds about right! This fun-loving couple chose Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio’s famous beach for their wedding day; the aisle was decorated with whimsical bunches of soft pink roses. After the ceremony we took some photos on the beach, even climbed some trees and let off a beautiful wish lantern. Then the wedding party returned to their rental home, Casa Las Brisas; for a wonderful dinner on the roof top terrace….a perfect day!

Health, Healing and Yoga Retreat in Costa Rica

I recently did a photography project for Samana Health Retreats. They were running a retreat at the beautiful Mareas Resort in Uvita, Costa Rica. Sisters, Ashley and Julie lead amazing health retreats blending naturopathic medicine, nutrition and the physical and spiritual practices of yoga. Ashley is a Naturopathic Doctor and Julie is a certified yoga instructor and holistic health coach, making a highly knowledgeable, talented and fun team. Wedding at Los Sueños Resort – Costa Rica – March 2014

This wedding couple love fishing, so what better to have their wedding but at a marina in Costa Rica. The Los Sueños Resort and Marina in Herradura is on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and has great sportfishing! Apart from the bride and groom the star of the show was their bulldog “Chancho” looking very suave in his bow-tie. The wedding took place on the lawn of the Los Sueños resort and then there was a reception dinner, dancing to a fantastic music group, a fabulously fun photo booth and to top it off fireworks. Did I mention the bride and groom like fishing? …check out the cake topper! "

Beach Wedding and Trash the Dress – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica March 2014

A fun-loving couple wanted some unique photos for their wedding day…so how about a helicopter and some underwater photos?!
This gorgeous wedding was planned by Costa Verde and the ceremony was held at Playitas Beach. Playitas is the quieter end of the Manuel Antonio beach with great views looking towards the Manuel Antonio National Park. After an intimate ceremony we got some great photos on the beach and climbing in caves. I got the wedding couple to climb to the top of the big rock (seen on the first photo) and got some amazing aerial photos using my helicopter drone. Later, the wedding party went to El Avion one of Costa Verde’s restaurants for the reception dinner. The next day I met the newly married couple and we did a Trash the Dress session at the Costa Verde Pool…what fun!

Wedding at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort Montezuma Costa Rica March 2014

This colorful and fun wedding took place at the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort in Montezuma last month. The wedding took place under a wooden arch on the beach in front of YlangYlang. After the ceremony we took photos on the beach and then the wedding party returned to YlangYlang for the reception. After a wonderful dinner, the bride and groom had their first dance, I LOVE the passion captured in these photos. Then onto the beach for a bonfire and fireworks…what an amazing night!

Casa de mi Hermano – Los Suenos, Costa Rica 2014

I recently got a a new toy – a helicopter drone, that I have been learning how to use (playing with) for the last few months. It is has been great fun and this is one of my recent projects of a home in Los Sueños. Casa de mi Hermano is a gorgeous Mexican style home located on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Los Sueños is in a sought after location in Herradura, near Jaco and not too far to reach from San Jose. Casa de mi Hermano has lots of beautiful tile and ceramic features, each of the 3 bedrooms has it’s own bathroom. It is close to the beach and Los Sueños’s facilities that include, marina and golf course.

Rainforest and Beach Engagement Photography in Costa Rica – March 2014

This adventurous couple were vacationing in Costa Rica, and wanted to get some memorable engagement photos. I picked them up at their hotel in Manuel Antonio and we drove 30 minutes to Rainmaker. Rainmaker is a private nature reserve, and one of my favorite “hidden gems”. They have beautiful trails through primary rainforest, the park has many waterfalls and hanging bridges…perfect to get some amazing jungle portraits. We then headed back to Hotel Mariposa for a quick change and then off to the Manuel Antonio beach for some gorgeous sunset photos. We had a great day and a lot of fun!

Wedding at Villa Caletas, Costa Rica February 2014

This couple decided to plan their own wedding in Costa Rica, a daunting task some might think. They chose Villa Caletas, a beautiful resort nestled on Costa Rica Pacific Coast to stay, and brought a lot of the details from home. The bride wore a gorgeous backless dress and the bridesmaids all wore shades of pinks and corals. The ceremony took place in Villa Caleta’s private amphitheater, and then the guests had a reception dinner and dancing in the main hotel. I love the place name seahorse idea…the bride and groom gave me a couple to bring back for my daughter…she loves them too!

Surprise Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica February 2014

February is the month for romance! We’ve had the fabulously romantic sailboat engagement and now a surprise wedding!
When my good friend called me, telling me that her cousin wanted to surprise her boyfriend with a wedding, I thought..this is going to be FUN!
The couple were engaged but had just not got round to tying the knot, so this was a great relaxed way to it do it. To entice the unsuspecting groom the Tulemar Beach in Manuel Antonio we made up a story about my friend needing some photos done. And when they arrived at the beach there was an officiant and flowers…the fiancee was over joyed and it was a lovely simply beach ceremony….ahh vive la romance!

Sunset Sail Engagement in Manuel Antonio – February 2014

What an unforgettably romantic proposal!
This couple was vacationing in Costa Rica, when the boyfriend decided to surprise his girlfriend with an amazing sunset proposal. Sunset Sails offer beautiful coastal trips around the islands of Manuel Antonio, they have several different size boat and we were on one of their gorgeous sailboats. We headed out from Marina Pez Vela in Quepos during the afternoon and enjoyed the vistas of Manuel Antonio’s rocky coast with hidden sandy beaches. Dolphins played in the waves at the bow of the boat and at sunset Adam went down on one knee and proposed. It really was a magical trip!

Beach Wedding at “The Bali House” – Manuel Antonio – Costa Rica – Jan 2014

This beautiful beach wedding took place at sunset of Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio’s main beach. The wedding party were all staying at the stunning Casa Akira, often know as “The Bali House”. Casa Akira is one of the very few beach front rental properties in Manuel Antonio, there is a short trail from the house to the beach through beautiful jungle gardens. This means the wedding party could “step out” on the gorgeous Manuel Antonio beach, but still have privacy. Such a beautiful day, gorgeous colors and lovely people.

I have included several photographs of the lighting of the paper lanterns, as I love these images! They captured such a wonderful moment!

Architectural Photography – Casa Bamboo Costa Rica 2014

I recently photographed a gorgeous house called Casa Bamboo, the owner wanted some good photos for vacation rental marketing. This luxury villa is located in a small village called Dominicalito on Costa Rica’s central Pacific Coast, between Dominical and Uvita. The villa has outstanding ocean views, I love the windows in the living room fill the house with light. This house is really interesting with it’s many angles and balconies pointed towards the ocean.

There are many beautiful vacation rental houses in Costa Rica, so good professional photographs can really make a huge difference in the marketing of your vacation rental. Wedding at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort Montezuma Costa Rica January 2014

This whimsical romantic wedding took place at the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort last weekend. The bride and her two sisters looked stunning with flowers woven into in their long tresses. The wedding took place under a wooden arch in Ylang Ylang’s beautiful gardens right next to the beach. The whole vibe of the wedding reminded me of Shakespeare’s a “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, specially when we started playing with the star projector (see second to last image).

Looking out to the water, I saw the phosphorescence dancing in the waves. I magical end to a magically romantic wedding, all is missing is Puck on a surfboard!

Costa Rica’s Phosphorescent Waves – 2014

Several year ago I was in Montezuma photographing a wedding at the Ylang Ylang beach Resort. That night walking back along the beach after the ceremony, I was amazed be the phosphorescence in the water.

This weekend, again I was walking back after a wedding at Ylang Ylang and looking out to the ocean I could see an incredible phosphorescent light show in the water. I stopped for about an hour playing with my camera and taking some amazing long exposure photos. Even as I stepped in the waves I could see the phosphorescence sparkling around my feet in the wet sand, it was a magical photo session.

The first photo is a 3 1/2 minute Exposure, I love the movement of the water around the rocks, it gives a really ghostly appearance.

The second photo was a 7 minutes exposure. The streaks in the sky are the star moving and the lights on the water are fishing boats in the distance. I am proud to say that this photo was selected by the National Geographic to be their lead image in their weekly space gallery!

Why does this magic light show occur? Certain types of oceanic plankton produce a phosphorescence in a chemical response to the energy produced by the waves movement.

A Pacific Ocean sunset was the romantic backdrop for this wedding in Villa Caletas’ stunning amphitheatre. The amphitheatre was decorated with purple rose petals that complimented the bridesmaids dresses. The wedding party then had a wonderful meal the tables decorated in purples, I love the sand dollar details on the place cards and seats. Such and fun event and another perfectly planned wedding by Weddings Costa Rica.

We first visited Playitas Beach at the north end of Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio’s famous beach. Later, we headed back to their hotel, The Parador and got a few more stunning photos. Manuel Antonio Wedding – Costa Rica December 2013

A surprise tropical rain shower during this outside ceremony did not dampen this wedding party! The ceremony began on the ocean-view terrace of Villa Celaje, a luxury vacation home in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. About half way through the ceremony the heavens opened and we had to run for cover! The house has a large entertaining room with a deck overlooking the ocean, perfect for the rest of the wedding ceremony. Later the reception dinner and dancing took place at the house. The couple had really wanted some epic sunset photos, so the following day I took them to the Manuel Antonio beach and there was an incredible sunset! So they got to have a fabulous wedding AND have great relaxed sunset beach photos ….perfect!

Architectural Photography – Villa Ambiente Costa Rica 2013

I have recently been working on an architectural photography project of Villa Ambiente. This eight bedroom luxury villa is located in a small village called Dominicalito on Costa Rica’s central Pacific Coast, between Dominical and Uvita. The villa has outstanding ocean views and a beautiful outdoor living space to them.. The cocktail bar looking over the ocean is amazing. The eight bedroom are all set off an plant-filled inner atrium ..tropical living at it’s best!

A pink and white rose petal aisle overlooking the Pacific Ocean was the romantic scene for this wedding. Villa Caletas is a small luxury resort perched high on Costa Rica’s rocky coastline. A mariachi band played vibrant music to the bride and groom. The wedding party then had a wonderful meal the tables decorated in reds, pink and silver. The wedding party then had fireworks and a latin american carnival comparsa group to finish the night. Such and joyful event and another perfectly orchestrated wedding by Weddings Costa Rica.

The Night Tour with “The Bug Lady” – Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Last week I photographed a wedding in Drake Bays in the Osa Peninsula, this area is renowned as the most untouched zone on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. It’s a few hours drive and boat ride from my home in Manuel Antonio, so I decided whilst I was there to enjoy and photograph some of this wild and abundant nature.
I had heard of “the Big Lady” of Drakes Bay through friends, so booked a tour. Tracie and Gianfranco have been living and guiding in the area for 15 years, and know everything about the local bugs, snakes and creepy crawlies. Their 2 1/2 hour hike is PACKED with critters as Tracie and Gianfranco tag-team to find a specimen and then explain fascinating details about it. My favorite is the Trapdoor Spider, though I am not sure I will EVER be able to find one on my own…I will just have to go back!

Wedding at Copa de Arbol, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica November 2013

A wedding in the Osa Peninsula? A couple hours drive, followed by an hour boat ride along a jungle rivers and into Drakes Bay, sounds like an adventure, but that is only the beginning!
This wedding couple visited the Copa de Arbol Hotel on vacation and decided that this was where they had to get married surrounded by their closest friends and family. The Copa de Arbol Hotel is new luxury resort in an area renowned as the most untouched on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. The hotel is not accessible by car, only a short boat ride from Drakes Bay or an hours hike along a coastal jungle trail.
At the end of the night, I had beautiful moonlit hike back along the trail to my accommodation in Drakes Bay…it’s all part of the job of being a Photographer is Costa Rica, and going that extra mile….literally!

Montezuma is a laid back artsy little town on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. A perfect location for this couple from Canada! This elopement wedding took place on the beach, there was a little sprinkle during the ceremony, but that did not stop us…it’s lucky too!

This French Canadian couple got married on the beach in front of the beautiful Ylang Ylang Beach Resort in Montezuma, Costa Rica. The wedding was conducted in both French and English. The bride wore red and she looked stunning and I love how the red pops out against the darkening sky. The group returned to the hotel for a fun reception party and then had a bonfire on the beach. Rainforest Wedding Photography – Rainmaker Costa Rica 2013

This newly married couple tied the knot back at home and decided to bring their wedding gear on honeymoon to Costa Rica get some unique jungle wedding photos. We headed to the rainforest reserve of Rainmaker to get some fantastic photographs of the bride and groom in jungle waterfalls and on Rainmaker’s hanging bridges….love and nature entwined!

Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica August 2013

This intimate beach wedding took place on Playa Espadilla, in Manuel Antonio, on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. The wedding party consisted of the bride and groom and their two daughters who were flower girls. The weather at this time a year is a guessing game, but today it was on our side and the rain held off until after the ceremony. I love the bright yellow against the grey and blues of the ocean and clouds..enjoy!!

Wedding at Hotel Parador Manuel Antonio Costa Rica August 2013

This destination wedding was held at the beautiful Hotel Parador in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. The Parador has beautiful grounds and amazing views of the Manuel Antonio coast. This intimate wedding took place in the morning on one of the hotels private ocean view terraces. A morning wedding is a great choice for the rainy season, as mornings tend to be beautiful blue skies and sunny. After the wedding ceremony the wedding party enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the hotel. Then I took the bride and groom headed to the Manuel Antonio Beach for some romantic couple photos…a great day!

Wedding at Villa Caletas, Costa Rica July 2013

An ivory rose petal aisle over looking the Pacific Ocean, was the scene for this beautiful wedding at Zephyr Palace in Villa Caletas, Costa Rica. The guests were seated in see-through chairs..perfect not to interrupt the ocean view. The bride looked stunning in a gorgeous ivory gown whilst the bridesmaids were in colorful silks. The wedding party then had a wonderful meal the tables decorated in colorful mix of purple and topical oranges. The party then kicked of with music and dancing until late…a pleasure to photograph! Another great wedding organized by Weddings Costa Rica.

Punto de Vista Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica 2013

What a spectacular location for a wedding, Casa Punta de Vista in Manuel Antonio really is breath-taking. The whole house was decorated in beautiful cream and orange floral displays – another stunning wedding arranged by Weddings Costa Rica! The wedding ceremony took place on the upper level which has a view of the Pacific Ocean looking towards the Manuel Antonio National Park. Casa Punto de Vista has five levels with views from all the bedrooms – luckily for the guests (and me!) there is an elevator. The reception dinner was held on the level below and dancing was in the ballroom on the ground floor…the band was fantastic!! DSCN1159 HannahStevenWedding-699

Sunset Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica July 2013

This was such a fun and vibrant wedding and a joy to photograph. This young couple tied the knot in front of 50 friends and family on Playa Espadilla in the heart of Manuel Antonio. The bride and groom walked down a rose petal aisle and said their vows on the sand under the almond trees on the beach. Most of the wedding party left their shoes at the shoe valet to walk barefoot on the beach. After some beach fun and family, group and bride and groom photographs the wedding party went up to the Hotel Karahe to for the reception dinner, followed by dancing and a beach lantern release.

This fun and delightful wedding was planned Randy from Celebrations Costa Rica and held at the Hotel Karahe in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

Wedding at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort Montezuma Costa Rica February 2013

The Ylang Ylang Beach Resort in Montezuma, Costa Rica is wonderful place for a destination wedding. Montezuma itself is a small colorful artist-filled town and it’s just a short walk along the beach back to Ylang Ylang’s secluded bungalows set in lush tropical gardens.
An added bonus is that for me to get to Montezuma from Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast I need to take a speed boat…Awesome!!
The wedding took place in the grounds of the beautiful Ylang Ylang Beach Resort followed by fun photos on the beach and a then the guest returned for an amazing dinner at the Resort.

This beautiful wedding took place at La Fortuna, famous for its stunning views of the Arenal Volcano. Unfortunately the volcano was shrouded in cloud, but no matter – all eyes were on the bride and groom!

A sunset beach elopement in Costa Rica just could not be more romantic. This wedding took place on teh Manuel Antonio Beach, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. The weather was looking a little rainy which is very unusual for the dry season, but the weather was on our side with only a little shower after the intimate ceremony.

A Persian Wedding at Villa Caletas Costa Rica January 2013

This beautiful Persian wedding was a marvellous to photograph with the bright colors of the flowers and dresses against the stunning backdrop of the of the ocean. The family set up a traditional Sofreye Aghd or Wedding Spread, this includes pastries, herbs, salt, candles, mirrors and a blessed bread, which was specially baked with calligraphy written on it. Another Persian tradition, a bright blue shawl which is held over the bride and grooms heads during the ceremony. The wedding ceremony took place at sunset on Villa Caleta’s incredible private amphitheater. The wedding party then moved to the spectacular Zephyr Palace, Villa Caletas wedding reception venue for dinner and dancing.
A couple of days after the wedding the bride and groom came to Manuel Antonio for a sunset couple photo shoot, where we got some beautiful romantic photos.

A Bird that lives in a Burrow?

How strange!
But this is the Blue-crowned Motmot that we are talking about; one of Costa Rica’s many beautiful birds. They live in burrows up to 15 feet in length, but like to hang out in the day-time in trees and swing their fancy tail feathers.

I took this photo near my house in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. I often hear the call of the Motmot in the morning or late afternoon.

This beautiful wedding was organized by the amazing team at Weddings Costa Rica , their attention to detail and creativity once again made a perfect intimate wedding ceremony and celebration. The wedding ceremony took place at sunset on Villa Caleta’s private terrace and the wedding reception dinner was also at the hotel.

Beach Wedding – Cala Luna Tamarindo Costa Rica December 2012

This Costa Rican beach wedding, took place on Playa Langosta at the Cala Luna Hotel near Tamarindo. This was an intimate wedding with just the bride and groom and a few of their family and closest friends. The Cala Luna was the perfect choice with its luxury boutique feel and wonderful beach just steps awy. The wedding took place at sunset and then the wedding party returned to the hotel for beautifully prepared meal.

Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica November 2012

A sunset beach elopement was this families pick for their Costa Rican wedding. The bride and groom and their two young boys love the beach, so what better place to get married. We took a few photos on the beach first (incase the boys got covered in sand!) and during the romantic sunset ceremony the boys played on the beach. Erin from Oasis Weddings organized a babysitter and had treats on hand for the little ones, so that Mom and Dad could enjoy their romantic wedding….and get some fantastic photographic memories too

10 Things I Love about Costa Rica

On my walk this morning I was pondering to myself all the reasons I chose to live in Costa Rica. Having been away for several months, I can see with a new perspective the natural beauty around me as they say “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”

1. Connection with Nature – I can step out of my house in Manuel Antonio and go for a walk in the Costa Rican rainforest, being close to nature is so good for the soul. And not having to get into a car to do exercise is better for the environment and plus it’s easier!

2. Abundant Wildlife – As I am writing this on my balcony, I have a troop of White Face monkeys passing by. Yesterday morning there were 4 toucans in the tree outside my house, being able to share these impromptu experiences with my daughter is priceless.

3. Fresh Fruit at great prices - The day after we got back from travelling we went to our local market and stocked up on tropical fruits and vegetables. We had tons of stuff for smoothies and stirfries for the whole week and did not break the bank.

4. Diversity - Costa Rica is the most incredibly diverse country: geographically you can find beaches, rivers, valleys mountains, volcanoes, within a couple of hours drive? There are so many different habitats, such as cloud forest, tropical rainforest, tropical dry forest, mangroves. This give so many wild and wonderful creatures…sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas, leaf cutter ants…incredible.

5. Good Honest Slow Food - Food here in Costa Rica is cooked from scratch, go to a “soda” or a local cafe and the food might take a while but there is no processed food full of additives and hidden preservatives. In our first week back we went to one of our favorites in Quepos “Esquina de Sabor” and my love for the humble casado (typical plate of chicken, meat of fish with rice, beans and a veg) is BACK!

6. Value - The day after we got back one of my cats cuts himself and I had to take him to the vets to get fixed up. Anaestisa, stitches, antibiotics, iodine and a cat of cat food was $25… you can’t beat that.

7. Freedom – Being able to trek to waterfalls and pools in the forest without having to sign a waiver is so refreshing! I love the fact that is Costa Rica you can explore and discover. Even though there Costa Rica is becoming a popular destination you can still easily get of the beaten track.

8. Friends – I love the mix of people here, I have good friends from Costa Rica and from all over that have settled here - We are, as the ticos would say, an Ensalda (Salad) and it makes an interesting mix.

9. The Beach – Costa Rica has over 800 miles of beach, all of them different and beautiful. My local beach, Manuel Antonio is stunning. We were they yesterday afternoon, in the shade under some almond trees, my daughter was running about getting excited making sand castles and jumping waves…good natural fun. And so beautiful, that’s why so many people choose Costa Rica for their weddings.

10. A Healthy “Pura Vida” Life Style – It is easy to be healthy here, food choices are healthy, activities are energetic (in my first week back I have been snorkeling, walking on the beach and in the jungle, swimming and lots of playing with my little girl) Admittedly I have been to a couple of sunset happy hours, but drinking an ice-cold beer with good friends in a bamboo rancho surrounded by plants with an ocean view has got to be good for you somehow..right?!

Anyway I hope you enjoy my ponderings on this lazy Sunday, a little rest before the crazy summer photography season starts here in Costa Rica.

A Rainforest Vow Renewal – Rainmaker Costa Rica August 2012

This adventurous couple wanted to celebrate their marriage in the heart of the Costa Rican Rainforest. The couple had done a civil service in the US, but wanted to their wedding memories to be a little more personal and romantic! We conducted the vow renewal ceremony at Rainmaker, just a short drive from Manuel Antonio. This spot by the river is about a 20 minute hike into Rainmaker along rainforest trails. After a change out of hiking gear into wedding attire my soon to be wife, Katharine, conducted the vow renewal. The glorious back drop of the Costa Rican rainforest combined with a wonderfully happy couple made taking photographs easy! Congratulations to you both!

Vow Renewal – Discovery Beach House Manuel Antonio Costa Rica August 2012

These two ladies thought they were just coming on vacation to Costa Rica, little did they know their husbands had also organized a renewal of their wedding vows! Randy from Celebrations Costa Rica helped the two gentlemen organize a small romantic ceremony which took place under the palm and almond trees on Manuel Antonio Beach. Both couples were staying at the Discovery Beach House, which is one of the few houses that have direct beach access in Manuel Antonio. After the ceremony and some photographs the fun on the beach, the group returned to the Discovery Beach House for an intimate reception dinner and cake cutting.

This beautiful vow renewal was planned by Randy from Celebrations Costa Rica at the Discovery Beach House in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

Trash the Dress – Manuel Antonio Beach, Costa Rica July 2012

This bride and groom decided they wanted something a little different for their wedding photographs. The day after their beautiful hill-top wedding in Manuel Antonio we headed to the beach for a “Trash the Dress” photo session. We got some dramatic photographs against the volcanic rock and fun, romantic shots in the sand, then to the water! We got some gorgeous photographs in the waves, before a big swell came in, look at the 3rd ocean photo! We then returned to their Villa and took some stunning underwater photos, I love the one of the bride floating with the orchids…
